Hilo is a charming town in Hawaii that sits on the large curved Hilo Bay. The town has lush green colors due to the 70 inches of rain it receives each year. This large amount of rainfall makes it the wettest city in the country. Though you will want to take your umbrella or raincoat, the city has many historical and natural wonders within its limits. When you are looking into hotels Hilo has plenty of options to consider.
Polynesians first settled this area of Hawaii in 1100 and missionaries set up base camps in the city in the early 1800s. The area began to thrive in the 1900s when the sugar crop became popular. After tsunamis damaged the town and sugar became less of a commercial crop, Hilo changed into a more relaxing, historical community.
As you wander through the town, you may notice a clock within a town park that is set at 1:04 and never moves. This clock has a significant historical background. The town was hit by a tsunami in 1946 and many homes were destroyed and residents killed. In 1960, the area was struck by yet another tsunami and the clock stopped at 1:04 a.m., the exact time the tsunami hit. The area surrounding the clock was made into a park to preserve the history of the clock. The clock now stands as a reminder of the event as well as a memorial to those who died in the tragedies.
You will find Hilo a casual, relaxed community. Depending on when you choose to visit, you may very well have fun at festivals, fairs, or open-air markets in various parts of the town. These special events bring many of the locals out to enjoy the warm climate and cultural atmosphere.
When you are looking for sites that are unique to Hawaii, you will want to drive along Banyan Tree Drive. Banyan trees have many thick branches that grow out from the tree and then back into the ground. These thick woody branches often cannot be distinguished from the main trunk. The trees spread out laterally and can cover wide areas. You will see many of these trees along Banyan Tree Drive. Some of the trees have been dedicated to special individuals such as Cecil B. DeMille and Amelia Earhart. This unique street holds all of the wonderful aspects of Hawaii in one location.
The central "town square" of the city is Kalakaua Park. War memorials and historic buildings as well as other area attractions surround this park. The park was first a site for Christian missionaries to meet and later it changed into a New England style town square with important civic buildings nearby. The park was named in honor of the King of Hawaii from 1874 to 1891. King Kalakaua was often called the Merrie Monarch because he revived ancient Hawaiian dancing and singing. Hilo actually has an annual cultural event called the Merrie Monarch Festival that is dedicated to bringing a lot of those cultural traditions back into the modern era.
Hilo also has many beautiful natural areas that hold breathtaking views. Waiale Falls are a series of waterfalls bunched together. In the midst of a canyon, you can see the river, the falls, the surrounding mountains and miles of natural trees and wildlife. Another interesting sight lies within the Wailuku River State Park Boiling Pots Area. The boiling pots are a series of intriguing river patterns. Some of the area has waterfalls while other portions feature swirling and bubbling water. You will wonder what makes the water move as it does in this area.
Anytime you visit a tropical paradise such as Hawaii, you will likely want to spend as much time as you can on the beach. Keep in mind that the weather in this town is particularly wet and rainy. You will want to keep an eye on the forecasts so you can choose the best days for your beach adventures. Carl Smith Beach Park is one of the most beautiful beach locations in the city. You can also visit James Kealoha Beach, Leleui Beach Park and any number of others.
